Keen students of post-punk history as well as the genre’s best contemporaries, Document are as thrilling as they are brutal. Confident beyond their tender years too, these flagbearers of the “modern punk revival” write tense tracks as character-driven stories, explorations of paranoia, desolation and surveillance.

As anti-frontman Alex Evans becomes his rich characters on stage, he holds a mirror up to an angry society, largely avoiding political criticism in favour of skin-crawlingly exact observation. We thus trudge along in the monotonous company of some existentially self-destructive figure for a while, contemplating the uneasiness of youth and their relationship with an uncertain future later. Half-spoken polemics target various injustices, the band’s romantic side ruthlessly exploited in balance, literary motifs peaking too with allusions to Cold War espionage novels.

Ever heard a band sound grey? In Document’s shadow world things are rarely black and white so it makes sense they find solace in the “in between”, cementing their appeal to outsiders and tastemakers alike.
